Fishing Festival
«…The fishing festival is a vibrant traditional event celebrated in the wetland regions of Bangladesh, particularly in the haor and baor areas where life revolves around water. These wetlands, teeming with aquatic biodiversity, become the heart of communal gatherings during the late winter months. As the floodwaters recede and the vast stretches of low-lying land begin to dry, the season becomes ideal for this centuries-old tradition. Villagers and fishermen from surrounding communities come together, equipped with handcrafted bamboo fishing tools such as traps, nets, and spears. They wade into knee-deep water in ponds, beels (natural depressions), and lakes, their laughter echoing as they cheer each successful catch. For many, this event is not just about fishing but a joyful escape from the hardships of rural life and a moment to reconnect with nature and neighbors. Wetlands in Bangladesh are rich ecosystems that support a wide range of fish species, birds, and aquatic plants. During the fishing festival, people catch local varieties of fish such as koi, magur, shing, and boal. While men fish, women and children often watch from the banks, turning the event into a festive occasion for all ages. That day, I only had the GoPro with me, as my main underwater equipment had already been packed away. While I was swimming among the «local» fish, a thick flock of fish appeared like a cloud and moved towards me.
The harmony of the movement and the awe it provoked, as I was in the middle of it, was unique. There was a sign in the area, warning that there was a possibility a shark would follow the flock, something I only noticed later…»
