Those last seconds
«…That morning, we decided to follow four cheetahs on the hunt. We followed them for hours. We passed herds of topis, gazelles, and zebras. We knew something was going to happen. When, five hours later, our Maasai guide whispered, ‘they are going for the zebras,’ I was convinced they would attack the topis or gazelles dotted across the valley. Seconds later, the cheetahs burst into a small group of zebras. One cheetah ran towards us, clinging onto a foal. In those seconds, I took this picture of the mother zebra launching a last attempt to push her foal away from the attacking cheetah. She failed. I will remember those last seconds for the rest of my life…»

«…Humback whales are a common sight in Greenland. There are some 6000 of them during summer and they migtate to the Caribbean for the winter. As they dive, their tail flukes are displayed and their unique patterns are used as fingerprints for recognition of each idividual. This photo was taken during a boat trip in Disko bay, near Ilulissat. I envisioned it as a flower emerging from a sea garden bringing warmth to this frozen environment…»

Jackal eye behind dove
«…One morning my wife and I were parked next to a waterhole after our morning drive in Etosha National Park. Several flocks of Cape turtle doves came to drink water at the waterhole during the early hours of the morning. The birds only came to drink for a short period of time in the morning and after a while no birds were in sight. There was a black-backed jackal walking around the waterhole just waiting for the opportunity to catch one of these doves.
